What is TED and TEDx?

What is the idea behind TEDxArendal and TED? First off we need to explain the difference between TED and TEDx:

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. Subject to certain rules and regulations.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to the mission: Ideas worth spreading. It started as a conference in California in 1984, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with many initiatives. At a TED conference, the world’s leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. Speakers have included Roger Ebert, Sheryl Sandberg, Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Brian Greene, Isabel Allende, and Gordon Brown.

On TED.com, talks from the conferences are shared with the world for free as TED Talk videos. A new talk is posted every weekday.

About TEDxArendal

TEDxArendal is simply put a local version of a TED-conference. We get a licence to run each year, for all of the events, and have to go trough certain criterias to fulfill the demands that follow. This is to ensure that the quality of the program and show is always at its best, and that the name of «TED» is not abused in any ways – For instance to spread political messages or to sell products.

When we founded TEDxArendal we wanted two things.

  1. To create an arena in our region for the TED initiative, and spread the positives that follow with the talks, the available online material and so on.
  2. To give our regional talent and ideas a stage to present to the world their thoughts and their ideas.

It started in “Kunnskapshavna” – The harbour of knowledge

In addition, it falls nicely into the focus the region has on working on learning, education and such initatives. The main reason TEDxArendal came to be, is because of «Sørlandet kunnskapshavn». – A initiative taken by the municipality to create a facility that lets people mingle, create ideas, and synergise. TEDxArendal is a direct result of this – and is a initiative that sprung out of that environment. As such, the TEDxArendal also calls «Kunnskapshavna» our home, and this is where meetings are hosted and the main bulk of the work is done. TEDxArendal started in 2013.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At such an event, TED Talks and live speakers combine to spark deep conversation. These local, self-organized, events are branded TEDx, where “x” notes that the event is independently organized. The main TED staff provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but these events are self-organized. Learn more about TEDx »

CHRIS ANDERSON is TED’s curator. Since taking over TED in the early 2000s, he has shown how carefully crafted short talks can be the key to unlocking empathy, stirring excitement, spreading knowledge, and promoting a shared dream. Done right, a talk can electrify a room and transform an audience’s worldview. Done right, a talk is more powerful than anything in written form.

There’s no single formula for a great talk, but there is a secret ingredient that all the best ones have in common. TED Curator Anderson shares this secret — along with four ways to make it work for you. Do you have what it takes to share an idea worth spreading?

Tone & Voice

Julian Treasure is the chair of the Sound Agency, a firm that advises worldwide businesses – offices, retailers, hotels – on how to use sound. He asks us to pay attention to the sounds that surround us. How do they make us feel: productive, stressed, energized, acquisitive?

Treasure is the author of the book Sound Business and keeps a blog by the same name that ruminates on aural matters (and offers a nice day-by-day writeup of TEDGlobal 2009).
